Don’t cry Joni

“Don’t cry Joni” is the first English song which I listen when I began to study English. This song lyric has a meaningful story. The story told that the 15 year old girl like the boy next her door. He is 22 years old. Joni love Jimmy and she said that ” Jimmy, please wait for me”. However, Jimmy do not feedback Joni’s love, he thought that Joni was too young to love. Jimmy left his hometown to built his career and after that he realize that he love her. However, everything is too late, Joni got married with Jimmy’s best friend, John. This song’s meaning is that we should honor the person who next to us, love us. Don’t let everything which is too late, we cannot fix that. This song was recorded by the country music singer Conway Twitty in 1974 and it was released in 1975.

” Jimmy please say you’ll wait for me
I’ll grow up someday you’ll see
Saving all my kisses just for you
Signed with love
forever true

Joni was the girl who lived next door
I’ve known her I guess 10 years or more
Joni wrote me a note one day
And this is what she had to say

Jimmy please say you’ll wait for me
I’ll grow up someday you’ll see
Saving all my kisses just for you
Signed with love
forever true

Slowly I read her note once more
Then I went over to the house next door
Her tear drops fell like rain that day
When I told Joni what I had to say

Joni, Joni please don’t cry
You’ll forget me by and by
You’re just fifteen
I’m twenty two
And Joni I just cant wait for you

Soon I left our little home town
Got me a job and tried to settle down
But these words kept haunting my memory
The words that Joni said to me

Jimmy please say you’ll wait for me
I’ll grow up some day you’ll see
Saving all my kisses just for you
Signed with love
forever true

I packed my clothes
And I caught a plane
I had to see Joni
I had to explain
How my heart was filled
With her memory
And ask my Joni if she’d marry me

I ran all the way
To the house next door
But things weren’t like they were before
My tear drops fell like rain that day
When I heard what Joni had to say

Jimmy, Jimmy please don’t cry
You’ll forget me by and by
It’s been five years since you’ve been gone
Jimmy I married your best friend John ”

  1. I can’t really feel sad for anyone in this song. It was unreasonable for Joni to ask Jimmy, a 22-year-old, to put his life on hold and wait for her to get older (with no guarantee that she would still even be interested in him when she did come of age, or vice-versa). Likewise, it was unreasonable for Jimmy to expect Joni, a young woman in her early twenties, to have waited for him based on the slim chance that he may come back to be with her. But then again I guess love songs aren’t meant to be practical.

  2. Just right person but wrong time. Everything will be perfect when it happens in the right time and you call it’s destiny. Dont you realize? They love each other but not at the same time. Its the regret. And one more thing, dont believe in women’s promises.

  3. It’s a sad story because he didnt realized his feelings for her as soon as possible. Too late… but the life is what it was. Everything will be alright, just the melody of their love story is still echo in your heart.
What a lovely song, sad but beautiful melody.

  4. This song’s kind of old-fashioned to me, in terms of context & music. It looks like a love story of previous generations like my parents or grandparents rather than modern days.

For the song story, it gives me the idea that time changes, time destroys & time heals everything. As time keep flying, don’t expect anything to be forever, either the good or the bad. Humans & love are not the exception of the rule.
